Today, 10 May, the Church celebrated the feast day of Saint John of Avila, patron saint of the Spanish secular clergy and one of the most significant figures in the spirituality and theology of the Golden Age. Every year, the Faculty of Theology Saint Isidore of Seville joins in this commemoration, renewing its commitment to the study, dissemination and adaptation of the thought and teachings of Master Avila.
In this regard, the journal Isidorianum has devoted several studies to the figure of the Holy Doctor. Among recent publications, the work by José Antonio Ollero Pina, ‘Juan de Ávila and the Inquisition (I): unpublished document on his defence brief’, Isidorianum 33/2 (2024) 11–86, stands out in particular, in which the first surviving document by Master Ávila is edited and studied. This research is continued in a second contribution by the same author, ‘Juan de Ávila and the Inquisition (II): The members of the tribunal’, Isidorianum 33/2 (2024) 87–136

Through this research, the Faculty hopes to continue contributing to our understanding of Saint John of Avila and to the relevance of a body of thought that continues to illuminate the spiritual, pastoral and theological life of the Church.
