The Faculty of Theology Saint Isidore of Seville has published a new issue of its academic journal Isidorianum, focusing on an interdisciplinary approach to the Generation of ’27 and religious themes. The volume, available as open access on the journal’s website, is set against the backdrop of the upcoming centenary of this iconic literary group, which was founded in Seville in 1927 at the historic meeting of the Ateneo.
This special issue offers a fresh perspective on the authors of the Generation of ’27, highlighting a dimension which, although present in their works, has not always been a central focus of critical discourse: religious experience and the search for transcendence. The poetics of these authors can, in many cases, be understood as a form of inquiry into the divine, in which fundamental questions about the meaning of life, death and permanence are at the heart of their work.
Far from offering a reductive interpretation, the studies collected in this volume demonstrate how the sacred manifests itself in diverse ways in the work of figures such as Dámaso Alonso, Gerardo Diego, María Zambrano and Ernestina de Champourcin. Whether through dialogue with biblical and mystical tradition, the symbolism of nature, or philosophical reflection, the presence of the transcendent forms a profound and significant strand of their literary output.
This issue brings together ten papers drawn from various disciplines—history, philology, philosophy and theology—which analyse aspects such as the image of God in poetry, religious symbols, and the reinterpretation of biblical themes. This diversity of approaches reflects the Faculty’s commitment to dialogue between faith and culture, one of the cornerstones of its academic identity.
With this publication, the Faculty of Theology Saint Isidore of Seville reaffirms its vocation to contribute to contemporary thought from within the Christian tradition, offering tools to better understand the spiritual and cultural richness of our literary history.
