On 8 March, the Faculty of Theology Saint Isidore of Seville and the International Brotherhood of Researchers ‘Santo Cristo de la Oliva’ of Toledo signed a framework collaboration agreement. The event took place during the Scientific Conference ‘Cathedrals beyond faith. Space for culture and human formation’, held in the San Clemente Hall of Seville Cathedral. The aim of this agreement is to promote joint work in the scientific, academic and cultural spheres, thus strengthening the links between theology and other disciplines of knowledge.
During the ceremony, the Dean-President of the Faculty, Mr. Manuel Palma Ramírez, highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary dialogue in the academic field, stating that ‘the scientific and academic world promotes increasing specialisation, which is undoubtedly an important factor in the achievement of so many achievements, but in this context, more than ever, the urgency of the necessary interdisciplinary dialogue is perceived, of which this pact is a living testimony’.
In his speech, the Dean underlined the fundamental role played by theology in the history of thought, referring to Saint Isidore of Seville and his encyclopaedic work Etymologies, pointing out that ‘Saint Isidore understood that theology cannot be closed in on itself, but that it is called to illuminate and also to allow itself to be illuminated by the various fields of knowledge’.
He also recalled the exhortation of Pope Francis in the Apostolic Constitution Veritatis Gaudium, in which we are called to ‘promote synergies and collaborative networks in the field of research and teaching’. In this line, he stressed that ‘theology, far from isolating itself in an abstract sphere, is called to dialogue with science, philosophy, humanities and social sciences, to enter into the complexity of reality and to be able to echo the profound and hopeful questions, the challenges of people today’.
The agreement represents a firm commitment between the two institutions to develop research projects, academic initiatives and spaces for dialogue that enrich both intellectual work and Christian witness in today’s world.
The event concluded with an appeal to the inspiration of St Isidore of Seville, asking him to ‘inspire us along the way and draw from the Holy Spirit the light for our minds and hearts, so that our work may always be a service to the truth and a witness to the wisdom that comes from God’.
