For yet another year, the Faculty of Theology Saint Isidore of Seville is holding its traditional Theology Day, an event which, with more than thirty editions, has established itself as a point of reference in theological reflection and study within the Spanish Church.
The 34th edition of this conference will take place on Thursday 20 February in the ‘Juan Guillén’ Conference Hall. The session will begin at 9:30 am with the blessing of the mural painting ‘Portico of the three virtues’, a work by the artist Juan Palomo Reina, located at the entrance of the Oratory ‘Gaudete et Exsultate’. Afterwards, His Excellency Archbishop José Ángel Saiz Meneses, Archbishop of Seville and Grand Chancellor of the Faculty, will be in charge of presenting the day.
This year, the central theme will continue to focus on the Council of Nicaea I (325), focusing on its Magisterium. This continuity responds to the Faculty’s commitment to the study of this key event in the history of the Church, in the context of the seventeen hundredth anniversary of its celebration, an event that will be commemorated in 2025. As announced by Monsignor Saiz Meneses in the previous edition, the Faculty has decided to dedicate several academic years to analysing the most relevant aspects of the Council, consolidating this Conference as a space for study and theological dialogue around this ecclesial milestone.
After the presentation, Prof. Dr. Jesús F. de Garay Suárez-Llanos, from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Seville, will give a talk entitled ‘Philosophy and formulation of the dogma of Nicaea’. This will be followed by Prof. Dr. Vicente Tur Palau, from the San Vicente Ferrer Faculty of Theology in Valencia, who will speak on ‘Dogma and the magisterium of the Council of Nicaea’. In the third intervention, Prof. Dr. Daniel Escobar Portillo, from the San Dámaso Ecclesiastical University of Madrid, will speak on ‘The liturgy in the Council of Nicaea’. Finally, after a short break, Prof. Dr. Victoriano Montoya Villegas, from the Instituto Superior de Ciencias Religiosas de Almería, will close the block of lectures with his presentation on ‘Christology and soteriology in Nicaea’.
At 12:30 pm, after the conferences, there will be a round table discussion on the theme ‘The ecumenical value of the Council of Nicaea’ moderated by Prof. Dr. Miguel Ángel Núñez Aguilera, Diocesan Delegate for Ecumenism and Ordinary Professor at the Faculty of Theology Saint Isidore of Seville.
This conference is especially aimed at students of theology, priests, religious, teachers, university students interested in the sacred sciences, catechists and pastoral agents, offering a unique opportunity to deepen the legacy of the Council of Nicaea and its relevance today.
