The Faculty of Theology Saint Isidore of Seville, in collaboration with the Chapter of the Cathedral of Seville, is organising the Magna Hispalensis Chair of Faith, Art and Culture conference to be held from 11 to 13 November 2024, starting at 6:30 pm. These conferences, directed by the canon and professor Manuel Sánchez Sánchez, will take place in the Seville Cathedral choir loft, with access through the door of San Miguel.
Under the title ‘Sedes Hispalensis: Fons Pietatis. La Catedral de Sevilla, Fuente de Piedad’, this edition of the Chair is presented as a prelude to the 2nd International Congress of Brotherhoods and Popular Piety, which will take place in December. The conference will focus on the rich devotional heritage of the Cathedral, with special attention to such important figures as the Inmaculada, the Virgen de la Antigua, the Virgen de los Reyes and the role of the Cathedral in the penitential stations of Holy Week.
In addition to the conferences, the programme will include moments dedicated to sacred music and a visit to the exhibition that the Cathedral will host as part of the International Congress. This event offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the relationship between Faith, Art and Culture in the context of popular devotion in Seville.
The objective of the Magna Hispalensis Chair is, in addition to valuing and publicising the heritage of Seville Cathedral, to create a specialised bibliographic collection in collaboration with the Benedict XVI Library and the publications of the San Isidoro Faculty of Theology. It also seeks to foster contact with academic and religious institutions that investigate the role of art and faith in culture.
